Job Summary:

Under direct supervision of a physician or similar practitioner or higher-level Registered Nurse and general direction of the Executive Director, the incumbent will act as a Registered Nurse I for the San Bernardino Student Health Center and may also work on the Palm Desert Campus as needed. The Per Diem Registered Nurse will also be responsible for active participation in health education activities, assign tasks to and review work of clinic support staff within their scope of work, and assists with development of policies, protocols and procedures. Additional duties can include participation in health center and campus wide committees when assigned.

Duties / Responsibilities

  • Follows established triage protocols to provide triage and/or first aid for minor injuries to students, staff, faculty and campus visitors.
  • Responsible for the daily schedule and balancing provider time based on patient acuity and utilization.
  • With prior approval from individual providers, give students their normal lab results. If a student requests a result that is not within normal limits, schedule an appointment for the student with the rendering provider.
  • Understanding orders, evaluate requests for HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) testing, including patient assessment, testing, pregnancy options, counseling, and appropriate referrals.
  • Under the direction of a physician, assist with medication refill requests.
  • Room patients and take vital signs and make appropriate entries on medical charts.
  • Prepares patients for examination by a clinician and assists in the examination and treatment when appropriate.
  • Follow-up on treatments as requested and interpret or explain treatments to patient.
  • Applies heat or cold modalities, instructs patient in use of physical therapy appliances (crutches, canes, etc.)
  • Performs vision and hearing screening tests.
  • Performs electrocardiogram, ear irrigation and similar treatments.
  • Assists in preparation of slides and cultures.
  • Prepares requisitions for laboratory and x-ray work as ordered by a Physician.

Patient Education

  • Provides ongoing Health Education for patients.
  • Provides sexual health education, counseling and care, including administration of medication abortion services, including but not limited to, assisting with Family Planning/Contraception Immunizations/Injections/Medications.
  • Administers medications by mouth or hypodermic injection as ordered by clinician.
  • Assists in administration of all injections (MMR, Td, TB skin tests, etc.) on and off-site.
  • Per provider request, contact patients to give information regarding referrals, prescriptions, recheck appointments.
  • Effectively applies nursing knowledge and proper techniques in performing routine laboratory testing such as urinalysis, hemoglobin, glucose, and urine pregnancy tests. Prepares lab samples obtained by medical providers for pick up by the lab. Assists with medical examinations and procedures as requested by clinic medical providers.
  • Under direct supervision, administer immunizations and medications.
  • Provides educational counseling on a wide variety of health topics such as sexually transmitted infections, contraception, hypertension.
  • Helps provider follow up on abnormal results
  • Assists with orientation of new nursing staff members and student interns when assigned.
  • Responsible for administering and reading tuberculosis (TB) skin tests. Orders lab work and/or chest X-rays according to TB protocols for individuals with a positive test result or a history of positive results. Schedules follow-up chest X-rays with a medical provider for those with positive readings.
  • Ensures medications and supplies are stocked and checks expiration dates to ensure items on shelves have not expired.
  • Ensures vaccine refrigerators’ temperature are regularly monitored and follows up on excursions.
  • Sets up treatment trays for procedures and other patient care activities, assists the provider, and cleans up afterwards.
  • Maintain keys as indicated for locking cabinets/doors/drawers.
  • Participates in Health Center committees such as Quality Improvement, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Prevention, and Accreditation, Mock codes and other activities.
  • Assists with development and update of nursing policies/procedures/standing orders.
  • Participates in clinic and staff conferences and other presentations when appropriate.
  • Participates in continuing education activities to keep current on pertinent topics as well as to complete ongoing licensure requirements.
  • Participates in Student Health Center activities such as health fairs, immunization clinics, and student orientations when assigned.
  • May work at San Bernardino Campus.
  • Other classification related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a professional nursing program in an approved school of nursing or by additional preparation as approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing. No experience is required as this is an entry-level registered nursing classification for recently licensed registered nurses.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • Must possess and maintain certification in CPR/AED

Required Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles, methods and procedures; anatomy and physiology applicable to assigned duties; medical supplies and equipment used in nursing practice; and the uses and effects of medications and narcotics. Working knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to registered nursing and the scope of practice limitations of clinic support staff.

Ability to effectively apply nursing knowledge and demonstrate proper techniques and skills in performing nursing duties; accurately observe and record symptoms, behaviors, and reactions to treatments in order to make a nursing diagnosis; respond with therapy to treatment reactions; use applicable health center automated systems to perform duties and maintain records and prepare reports; gain the cooperation of patients; analyze emergency situations and take prompt action; maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations; maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff; and be sensitive to and communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years post-graduate RN experience in student healthcare
  • Thorough knowledge of general methods, procedures, and practices of an outpatient medical facility
  • Working knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to registered nursing and the scope of practice limitations of clinic support staff
  • Thorough knowledge of medical supplies and equipment used in nursing practice; and the uses and effects of medications and narcotics
  • Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles
  • Working knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Working knowledge of software applications used in the Health Center
  • Ability to effectively apply nursing knowledge and demonstrate proper techniques and skills in performing nursing duties
  • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment
  • Ability to effectively apply specialized nursing skills
  • Ability to accurately observe and record symptoms, behaviors, and reactions to treatments in order to make a nursing diagnosis
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize, and plan work and projects
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $37.00 - $41.00 per hour

Classification Salary Range: $27.39 - $100.10 per hour

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Drivers License Check

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Physical Exam

Employment is contingent upon candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.

Mandated Reporter

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Campus Security Authority

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) position under the federal Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. CSAs are responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act Crimes reported to them or that they witness. CSA training is required.
